"Rent a friend" is a search that returns everything from hiking buddies to things that are not friendship at all. Here's an honest map of the platonic-companionship market — and where a person who does nothing fits.

First, a warning about the search results

Type "rent a friend" into a search engine in some cities and the results are polluted by listings that are not platonic and not safe. Two quick filters that separate the real thing from the rest:

1. Does it say "strictly platonic" out loud, everywhere? Genuine services are loud about it because it protects both sides.
2. Are meetings in public places only, with verified providers? If a listing offers to come to your home and nobody has checked an ID, close the tab.

The main models

1. Marketplace rent-a-friend (RentAFriend, US / UK)

The original, running since 2009. Friends list themselves and set their own hourly rate — typically $10–50 per hour in the US and £15–40 per hour in the UK, with basic companionship around $20/hour. The platform charges the client a membership fee to see contact details; from there you arrange things yourselves.

Good for: activity partners — someone to go to a concert, show you a city, hit the gym with.
Watch for: once you have a phone number you're off-platform; verification and safety are largely up to you.

2. Regional rent-a-friend services (India, UAE)

In India, services like Rent a Friend India price at roughly ₹599 per hour for calls and ₹699–1,200 per hour in person, focused on metro cities. In Dubai, Friend On Rent-style listings sit in the AED 50–150 per hour range. Quality varies enormously between individual providers, and the platonic line is not always clearly drawn.

Good for: local knowledge, conversation in your language.
Watch for: inconsistent verification; you often pay first and hope.

3. Professional companions and "cuddle" services

A different category with different rules, usually involving physical contact (cuddling) or care work (elder companionship). Legitimate businesses exist here, but it's not what most people mean by renting a friend and it is not what Nothing does.

Good for: eating out alone, plus-ones, waiting rooms, the cinema, "I'll go if someone comes", being witnessed.
Watch for: if you want a tour guide or a hiking partner, this is deliberately not that.
